When the bushman found he could ‘read’ cave paintings, did he find more than bargained for?
Edward Bean was a bushman living outside Townsville in Northern Australia where the suburban sprawl had come all around his household. He became a noted local figure, of his own kind, in the semi-rural, semi-suburban life of that area. The bush, low country mainly, very grassy, was nearby.
He came to my attention, as a small boy, for his effort to save a calf that had eaten green lucerne. I did not see but was told that when he was fetched in, the beast was already on its side. He slipped in a razor-sharp knife, somewhere into its rib cage, and the gas blew out, but too late. The creature died.
