This is the website of Lee Richard Duffield PhD, serving as a repository and
directory for his work in diverse fields. It presents current writing, whether
academic material or shorter pieces, and provides a forum section for feed-
back.

Lee Duffield, initially trained as a teacher, began work as a journalist with the
Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1970, in Brisbane. He was the first news
editor on the ABC youth network Triple Jay, in Sydney, and the European
Correspondent at the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. He became Deputy
Director of Ministerial Media in the Goss Labor government of Queensland,
representing the reform agenda of that government in state administration
and governance. He served briefly as the Public Affairs Officer at the Australian
High Commission in New Zealand, 1996-97, before being offered a position at
James Cook University and the opportunity to study for a doctorate. He was an
academic for twenty years, initially at JCU and then the Queensland University
of Technology, as a Senior Lecturer in Journalism. He was for four years a staff
representative on the governing Council of QUT, similar to his current role as a
member of the Senate of Queensland University – elected by graduates of the

university in 2021. Early achievements or gestures of esteem include Special
Mention in the national Paul Tonkin Award for cadet journalists; a Jefferson
Fellowship for Asia-Pacific journalists at the East West Centre, Hawaii, 1976,
and Silver award for the United Nations Association Peace Prize, 1980.

Lee Duffield has published widely, on European affairs, new media and
journalism, and development journalism in the Asia-Pacific region. He was an
‘early adopter’ or pioneer in globalisation of higher education, conducting
several reporting field trips for Journalism students to countries in Asia, Europe
and the Pacific, 2000 to 2014 – with accompanying research in the field of
internationalisation of the curriculum. He was principal supervisor, to
completion, of four doctoral theses, four MAs and 17 Honours.

He has books, as joint editor or monographs, on journalism in the new
economy (2006), the Berlin Wall (2009), and media in Europe (2010). In 2021
he published Arnie: Pearls and Luggers in the Torres Strait, jointly written with
an older cousin, Arnold Duffield, a biographical and historical treatment of life
in Northern Australia. He has a BA in History and Politics (UQ, 1969), Diploma
in Journalism (UQ, 1974), Bachelor of Educational Studies (UQ, 1982), MA with
Merit (USyd, 1983), and PhD (JCU, 2003). Access to publications is through a
set of databases listed on the home page of this site. He lives in Brisbane,
where as well as the commitment with the UQ Senate, he is chairman and
media editor on the online publication Independent Australia, and an advisory
board member of the academic journal Pacific Journalism Review. He is
knowledgeable and experienced with small boats and supports animal welfare.
